http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLZKqGbNfck&feature=relatedYouTube - Part 07: String Theory To M-Theory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PVjNlXj2WQEd Witten. new perspective on string theory. 7 mintues. called M-theory. what does the "m" stand for? no one knows. a lot of panic ... things are changing! explains. (had to watch through part 11.... couldn't flip the switch.....)
previously
10 dimensions: 1 time, 3 space, + 6 extra dimensions - that are currently invisible to humans
open ended strings move in > 3 dimensions!
closed ended strings (shag run loops) are stuck on the slice of bread.
now we're saying 11
burt ovrut - university of PA
we only see 3 + 1
left/right back/forth up/down and time
movie - have to step out of the screen
dimensions = degrees of freedom
you can do more if you can move freely!
11th dimensional string streches into a membrane
a
could be 3 or > dimensions
w/ energy, can grow! to be the size of a universe.
the loaf of bread is the bulk
we are trapped in a thin slice of the bread
gravity is actually a weak force
to overcome it, use your muscles or magnets
electromagnetic force is much stronger than gravity!
1 w/ 39 zeroes following - is how much stronger it is - don't know how to say that number!
"branes" and dimensions
gravity just appears to be weak.... may be just as strong as electromagnetic force, but we humans just cannot sense it - we are not set up to receive this frequency!
gravity simply keeps us on our slice of bread.
sound waves resonate though....
gravity may not be confined to the "brane" we sense
think jelly spread on toast, i.e., gravity
cinnamon and sugar slides off the surface!
it all has to do with shape!
closed loops.....no loose ends.... think a loop in a shag rug.
look at other kinds of strings!
ends are loose - can float in multiple dimensions
parallel universes
we can feel through gravity?
or hear?
matter, light, made of open ended strings.
ends are tied down to our 3_D membrane.
Graviton loop IS gravity -
it is not a closed loop - it can escape into other dimensions....
exchange gravity waves to communicate with beings in other dimensions, or "riding on other closed loops" so-to-speak!
alex guth - MIT - big bang - makes no sense. burt overt - U of PA. can string theory solve these issues? universe existed before the bang - forever! (there is no time as we think of it in our present paradigm! jj)
branes collide
universes live on branes - they are PARALLEL.
when branes collide, they create big energy and BANG
parallel universes collide within the loaf of bread all the time!
we don't know what happens when 2 branes collide.... math makes no sense.... need to solve this puzzle.
S. James Gattes, Jr, - U of MD
Joseph Lykken - Fermilab
what if we saw strings within the stars?
large extra dimensions.... Fermilab has a giant atom smasher.. zap hydrogen atomw w/ electricity. strip elec send pro zooming around 4 mile circle.... @ spped of light steered to collision w/ particles moving in opposite irection...occasionally there is a direct hit..... unusual shower of subatomic particles. are looking for the graviton. closed loop. can float off. haven't found it yet....
another team also looks for the graviton.... CERN 7 times more powerful than Fermilab.
super symmetry. electrons, protons, gravitons, and there should also be a sparticle. haven't found it yet. are VERY heavy. amanda peet university of toronto.
resonance....
